Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy – Some Applications in Medical Research
Lorena Ivona Ştefan
Abstract: Magnetic resonance spectroscopy is one of the most powerful technique for structure elucidation of a mixture’s compounds. The possibility of obtaining a global chemical profile of the sample proves that this method might represent an eligible technique for screening tests and also an important tool for medical diagnosis. This method can be used to characterize biological fluids, the tissue state and to investigate toxic effects of medical preparations in the target organs. The central physical phenomena of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy : is the absorbtion and emission of energy due to the property of some atomic nuclei, which have the spin number equal to ½ (odd number of proton and/or neutrons) to behave like microscopic bar magnets if we apply an external magnetic field, atomic nuclei like 1H, 31P, 19F or 13C. In this paper we found some applications of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in medical research.
