Phenotypic and genotypic methods in diagnosis of Acinetobacter infections

Abstract:

The control of nosocomial infections met serious difficulties during latest decades, caused by the “suc-cesful appearance” of a new opportunistic microorganism, Acinetobacter, in their etiology. The involvement of Acinetobacter into a variety of infections in immunocompromised patients, mainly in intensive care units and particularly in mechanically ventilated patients, as well as the lack of an effective treatment incite the interest of researchers for the study of this microorganism. Its ubiquitous character and the capability of rapid acquisition of genetic determinants for antibiotics resistance, the difficulties in establishing the corect taxonomic status only by applying phenotypic methods, and the necessity of an epidemiologic surveillance required the development of various phenotypic and genotypic testing methods. In this paper are presented the main methods that may be used in microbiology laboratories for current diagnosis and for determination of the clonality of the nosocomial isolates.
