Methods of analysis of the free light chains

Ileana Funduc

Abstract:

Free light chains or Bence–Jones proteins, fragments of immunoglobulins, are important markers both for the identiication and monitoring of B cells tumors. The possible means of analysis in the clinical laboratory are described. The biochemical methods (proteinuria, electrophoresis), immunochemical methodology (Ouchterlony double diffusion, electrophoresis with immunofixation, turbidimetry and nephelometry), comparison among them, their limits and errors are reviewed. Finally, the modern approach of the free light chains analysis is described.

Keywords: immunoglobulins,electrophoresis,immunofixation,turbidimetry,nephelometry.
