Capillary electrophoresis
Ileana Funduc
Abstract: Capillary electrophoresis is a newer technique which combines separation mechanisms of electrophoresis with the instrumentation and automation concepts of chromatography. There are many variants of capillary electrophoresis which solve different separation problems. These include free zone electrophoresis, gels for sieving and molecular weight based separations, isoelectric focusing, and isotachophoresis. The extraordinary separation power, speed of analysis and extreme sensitivity (a single molecule using laser induced fluorescence detection) are leading to intensive application of capillary electrophoresis by many of the best analytical research laboratories around the world. Being the most appropiate and efficient way to resolve both large and small charged molecules, capil-lary electrophoresis offers a wide variety of applications on the analysis of human body fluids.
