Abstract:

The aim of the study was to evaluate cardiovascular risk factors in a group of type 2 diabetic patients from the Diabetology Center in Târgu Mureş, in correlation with laboratory parameters and lifestyle. Material and methods: We determined oxidative stress in these patients compared to a control group, we evaluated lifestyle and dietary habits using a questionnaire, and we analysed some data of the medical sheets. Results: Lipoperoxidation level was significantly higher in diabetic patients compared to control group (p=0,0078), especially in cases having multiple cardiovascular risk factors, who present higher serum cholesterol (p=0,0238) and triglyceride level (p=0,0658) compared to diabetics without other risk factors. 79% of the diabetics are obese, around half of them present sedentarism, 31% smoke, 28% drink concentrated alcohol, 60% present cardiovascular diseases. Only 26% take dietary supplements, 71% drink medicinal teas. Conclusions: Oxidative stress is more intense in diabetic patients compared to the control group, especially those presenting multiple risc factors, reactive oxygen species having an important role in diabetes complications, especially cardiovascular diseases, frequently occured in the studied group. Wider use of dietary supplements could diminish oxidative stress. Obesity, sedentarism, smoking, alcoolism and dyslipidemic parameters are factors that facilitate diabetes complications. Changes in lifestyle and dietary habits could improve state of health in these patients.
