Abstract: Three patients hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), who initially responded unsatisfactory to antimicrobial treatment, were found to be infected by two strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae ssp. pneumoniae with different colonial morphotypes and resistance phenotypes, isolated from the same sample. Although nosocomial infections with multidrug-resistant strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae are not uncommon in ICU, this association in the same sample of two different strains belonging to the same specie, had never been reported in Romania. These three cases are a very strong argument for the strict following of the standard protocols of isolation, identification and susceptibility testing of bacterial strains.
