Laboratory diagnosis of acute leukemia

Elena-Cristina Selicean, Mariana Paţiu

Abstract:

Acute leukemias are a heterogeneous group of hematopoietic malignancies, characterized by uncontrolled growth of a leukemic clone, which is blocked in the maturation process. First classifications of acute leukemias were based solely on morphologic criteria, but the actual trend is to take into account biological and pathogenetic aspects. This review's purpose is to cover this complex subject, according to the latest WHO classification, in respect with examination requirements and from the perspective of laboratory physicians.

Keywords: acute leukemia,morphology,immunophenotyping,cytogenetics,molecular biology
